Kayumbu Children's Ministry is a part of Kayumbu Gospel Church. Our mission is to reach children with the gospel through their parents. This children's ministry started while we were still in the start stage of planting KGC, while having a Bible study in a home. One day, I noticed children outside eavesdropping and peeking through the windows. I left Johnny and Francine with the adults and went outside to reach out to the children. I asked the children to sit on the side and, as I shared the gospel with them, I was amazed by their response. Since that day, every week they have been ready for another lesson.
As the church grew from one to multiple home groups, the number of children also increased. We started mobilizing parents to respond to their God-given calling to disciple their children. We believe that, as God called Abraham in Genesis 18:19 and Paul reminded fathers in Ephesians 6:4, discipling children is the parents' responsibility. Therefore, our job as a church is to empower parents.
As a church, we expose parents to the truth that their children need to hear and understand the gospel. We do this in several ways: We encourage parent-child engagement by incorporating a section in our church’s Bible study guide for parents to do with their children. We also invest in parents’ leadership by equipping them to run the children's ministry.
Every Saturday, all our children come together for a shared Bible study. It is an opportunity for parents to learn, work, and grow together as they serve the children. It is also an opportunity for children from the neighborhood to come and explore who we are as a church and receive a small meal, as we have started a small outreach program to the community where we serve a cup of porridge to every child in our Bible study. Currently, we have six parents who are being equipped and are committed to serving in the children's ministry. We thank God for His grace, wisdom, and provision as we work to strengthen the local church through leadership and discipleship training of the parents in the community. These children will be the church leaders and teachers of tomorrow, please pray that God grants them the grace to believe.
